The episode was recorded during the 2025 "People and Defence" National Conference and features General Christopher G. Cavoli, the American four-star general, who serves as Supreme Allied Commander Europe. As the head of Allied Command Operations (ACO), he is NATO’s second-highest military leader.

"I truly appreciate the approach of using a podcast to reach the entire Swedish military organization, especially as the Swedish Armed Forces transition towards greater capability for large-scale warfare and collective defence. It is crucial that all personnel are now focused on this transformation compared to previous orientations," says General Cavoli.

Serious Words in Challenging Times

General Cavoli describes how the war in Ukraine has reshaped NATO’s role, pushing the alliance to focus on its core mission.

"Looking at what is happening in Ukraine right now, it’s clear that it is crucial for Ukraine to emerge successfully from the conflict with Russia. However, even if Ukraine does, Russia will remain a threat to European security," he states.

He predicts that Russia's military capabilities will continue to develop and grow, with the country likely to remain politically led by the same individuals or those with similar views. The situation is further complicated by Russia's increasing alignment with China, Iran, and North Korea during the war.

"This new group of states opposes the fundamental values that NATO and the broader West stand for. This is not a challenge we can ignore, dismiss, or evade. It is a problem we must confront."

Message to the Swedish Armed Forces Personnel

General Cavoli praises Sweden as a nation bringing skilled, professional, and technologically advanced forces into the alliance.

"Now that you are expanding, you also bring large-scale units of this caliber. What’s not to like about that!"

In the podcast, General Cavoli shares insights from the battles in Ukraine, including the type of leadership required at the tactical level.

"I believe traditional, heroic leadership is essential on the battlefield, as shown by the war in Ukraine. It’s not just about the top level. We must imagine ourselves in the shoes of a Ukrainian company or battalion commander, as we might find ourselves in the same situation."

At the same time, he emphasizes that this leadership must be conducted appropriately.

"We also demand that leadership be exercised in harmony with our values and the laws to which we are bound."

Insightful and In-Depth

In the latest podcast episode, General Cavoli also discusses his conclusions regarding technological advancements and battlefield tactics in Ukraine. He highlights how modern high-tech systems and older weaponry can work together effectively.

The general was thanked for his dedication to Sweden’s NATO membership process.

"We are very grateful for this. Your support has been well received in Sweden", says Supreme Commander Michael Claesson.
