The NATO English for Military Planners course targets staff officers (or aspiring) officers who need to use their second language English for conducting operational/tactical planning and coordination in NATO contexts (land/sea/air). Not recommended for civilians or native speaker officers.

Learning objectives

Participants to develop their ability to:

  • convey military operational/tactical analysis, evaluation and recommend a course of action in concise and appropriate spoken and written English
  • highlight the effects, and the “so what?” of briefing points.
  • use accurate NATO military op. and tact. terms
  • put forward and negotiate points of view in planning and problem-solving work
  • disambiguate and clarify to build shared understandings of terms with others (officers from partner nations)

Method

1. Vocabulary exercises on key operational/tactical NATO terminology in staff work, eg. mission task verbs, NATO joint functions (Jonas suggestion, as these are central to the planning process), and comparison with Swedish basic capabilities.
2. Speaking task: giving a concise verbal briefing eg to convey analysis and evaluation in a COA brief (suggestion to allow up to 10 minute verbal briefing per student, with peer and teacher feedback). Based on military scenario.
3. Writing task: follow up verbal brief with a written brief in appropriate military writing style.

These tasks also enable students to practise planning and problem-solving discussion and meanings of NATO/military vocabulary in small groups.

Target audience

Officers who are, or will be, appointed to positions in NATO where the need to brief commanders or others with on ongoing planning and planning results:

  • NCO: OR8/9.
  • Officer: OF-3 through OF-5.

Rank waivers can be accepted on case by case, given the HQs requirements and justifications.
